Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month Celebration

We are thrilled to extend a warm invitation to the families and students of the Waukegan Public School District to join us in celebrating the vibrant culture of Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPI). This event promises a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich heritage of AAPI communities through their food, music, and the different student projects representing the various aspects of the AAPI cultures. This year’s theme: “ Advancing Leaders Through Innovations” will highlight some amazing innovators who have made great contributions to the world through their creative inventions.

Retroactive Credit for Volunteering in Lieu of Student Fees

Our District recently sent out information regarding our District's new Volunteer Policy, where parents and students can volunteer at school and district events to earn credit toward fees owed. Since we announced this policy last month, we have been happy to see parents already take advantage of it.

We would like to provide further clarity to families and students who are inquiring if volunteer credit will be rewarded retroactively to those who have volunteered during the 2023-2024 school year. Anyone who submits proof of volunteer time completed after July 1, 2023, will be eligible to receive retroactive credits. All volunteering can be tracked using this form. A completed form, which includes the signature of the event supervisor, can be turned in to the main office of the school where a student is enrolled.

As a reminder, one (1) hour of volunteering is worth a $20 credit, but parents may earn a larger credit depending on the number of children they have in the District, as well as the type of event they volunteer for. An hour of volunteer time for school-related volunteer activities earns a $20 fee credit. Parents or guardians can determine which of their children's accounts the credit goes toward. For district-wide volunteer activities, an hour of volunteer time earns a $20 credit for each of a parent’s children in the District.

WPS 60 Six Flags abre Takeover

Waukegan Public Schools is taking over Six Flags Great America in May and you could be joining us!

All members of district 60 have recieved an Abre instruction letter in the mail that has their student login token on it. Log onto Abre through browser or the app and enter your student token from April 1 - April 30 to be entered in a drawing for up to four tickets to Six Flags Great America!

The trip will take place on Saturday May 11, 2024. Winners will receive free admission, parking and a meal voucher.

You can become eligible for additional entries to the drawing if you attend your school’s GPTO meetings or district parent group meetings such as Black Parent Network or D60 Dogs.

After graduation, Malcolm attended NIU and graduated early with a double major in psychology and sociology!

Malcolm is a traditionally published author as well as a cyber security expert.

In his time at Waukegan, Malcolm was involved in the College Studies Program (CSP), cross country, basketball, and track and field.

Share your favorite Waukegan High School memory:

This is a tough one because I have an endless supply of fond memories. One in particular that stands out was attending Global Fest in Bloomington-Normal during my Sophomore year. It was my first time taking an overnight field trip and it ultimately solidified my desire to attend a university after high school.

What is the most important thing you learned while you were at WHS?

The most important thing I learned was how to interact with people from varied backgrounds and socioeconomic experiences. It is because of Waukegan's rich diversity that I've felt comfortable in a wide range of professional and social settings as an adult.

What advice do you have for current students to make the most of their experience at Waukegan High School?

There are two things:

Know that there are adults around you who care a whole lot about your growth and happiness and who want to see you do amazing things. Most often they're just waiting for you to make the first move in showing that you are willing to work hard for yourself.

Meet as many of those adults as possible. Along with that, try your best to surround yourself with others your age who are also working hard to pursue their dreams.

How did your education at Waukegan High School prepare you for what you did in college and are doing today?

I was a part of the College Studies Program (CSP) and, from an educational standpoint, that program was structured perfectly. The course selection, academic rigor, and foresight were tremendous in preparing me for college and life.

Tell us about who you are and anything else you would like to share!

I'm a traditionally published children's book author and cyber security expert born and raised in Waukegan. I'm a married father of five who has a deep passion for telling stories of hope and possibilities. When not writing or spending time with family, you’ll probably find me either reading, spending time outside in my mini-orchard, being a lumberjack, baking bread or trying to learn something else new. My first children's picture book, Dear Star Baby, released with Beaming Books in April 2023 and second picture book, Sydney's Big Speech, released with HarperCollins in February 2024. I also have several forthcoming titles with HarperCollins and Holt:Macmillan. My next picture book is co-written with my childhood best friend, NYT Best Seller, Dr. Jemar Tisby--who is also a Waukegan native.

2024/2025 Returning Student Registration is Now Open

Registration is now open for students who will be returning to Waukegan Public Schools for the 2024-2025 school year.

All returning students will once again be registered through our Parent Portal. Any parents needing assistance with Portal are asked to please email their child’s school. The parent support email addresses for each school can be found here. Parents are encouraged to obtain their credentials before Spring Break.

We are excited to announce that the registration is more mobile-friendly this year, allowing parents to more easily register using a cell phone. Once logged in, parents can click the “More” tab from the menu bar, to begin the registration process.

The last day to register online will be April 30, 2024.

Black Parent Network & D.O.G.S to Meet Every Second Friday of Each Month

Our District's FACE Department will host a Black Parent Network (BPN) and D60 D.O.G.S (Dads of Great Students) meeting next week.

The meetings will be held back-to-back on January 12 in the gym of Whittier Elementary School, 901 N Lewis Ave. The Black Parent Meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the D.O.G.S meeting will follow at 6:30 p.m. Both groups will meet at the same respective time slots on the second Friday of every month. Upcoming meetings will take place: February 9, March 8, April 12, May 10 and June 14.

The Black Parent Network is a parent group to help Waukegan families, schools and the community businesses and organizations build good relationships with Black and African American families to encourage trust and relationships with the goal of fostering school success from PreK to graduation.

District 60 Dads are a group of male parents, guardians or other family members who serve as role models and mentors for our students.They organize events to encourage positive behavior and positive outcomes for students, support school and district events and activities, and more.

EMBODI Boys Youth Program

The Waukegan Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has created a young men’s youth group. Boys who are from the ages from 11-18 can join this group to learn about various topics such as mental health, lifestyle habits, fiscal management and more. Crédito retroactivo por voluntariado en lugar de cuotas estudiantiles

Nuestro Distrito envió recientemente información sobre la nueva Política de Voluntariado, donde los padres y estudiantes pueden ser voluntarios en eventos escolares y del distrito para obtener crédito para las cuotas adeudadas. Desde que anunciamos esta política el mes pasado, nos alegra ver que los padres ya la estan aprovechando.

Nos gustaría brindar más claridad a las familias y estudiantes que preguntan si el crédito de voluntariado se otorgará retroactivamente a aquellos que se hayan ofrecido como voluntarios durante el año escolar 2023-2024. Cualquiera que presente prueba de tiempo voluntario completado después del 1 de julio de 2023 será elegible para recibir créditos retroactivos.Todo el voluntariado se puede seguir usando esta forma. Se puede entregar un formulario completo, que incluye la firma del supervisor del evento, a la oficina principal de la escuela donde está matriculado el estudiante.

WPS 60 Six Flags abre Takeover

Esta es una pregunta difícil porque tengo un suministro interminable de buenos recuerdos. Uno en particular que se destaca fue asistir al Global Fest en Bloomington-Normal durante mi segundo año. Soy un padre casado y con cinco hijos que siente una profunda pasión por contar historias de esperanza y posibilidades. Cuando no estoy escribiendo o pasando tiempo con la familia, probablemente me encontrarás leyendo, pasando tiempo al aire libre en mi minihuerto, siendo leñador, horneando pan o tratando de aprender algo nuevo. Ya se Abrió la Inscripción para los Estudiantes que Regresan 2024/2025

Ya están abiertas las inscripciones para los estudiantes que regresarán a las Escuelas Públicas de Waukegan para el año escolar 2024-2025.

Todos los estudiantes que regresan se registrarán otra vez a través de nuestro Portal de Padres. Se pide a los padres que necesiten ayuda con el Portal que envíen un correo electrónico a la escuela de su hijo/a. La Red de Padres Afroamericanos & D.O.G.S se reunirán el segundo Viernes de cada Mes.

El Departamento FACE de Nuestro Districto organizara a una reunion la proxima semana para La Red de Padres Afroamericanos (BPN, por sus siglas en íngles) y D60 D.O.G.S (Padres de Estupendos Estudiantes).

Las reuniones se llevarán a cabo consecutivamente el 12 de enero en el gimnasio de la Escuela Elemental Whittier, 901 N Lewis Ave. La reunión de Padres Afroamericanos comenzará a las 5:30 p. m. y la reunión de D.O.G.S seguirá a las 6:30 p. m. Ambos grupos se reunirán en los mismos horarios respectivos el segundo viernes de cada mes. Las próximos reuniones seran: 9 de febrero, 8 de marzo, 12 de abril, 10 de mayo y 14 de junio.

La Red de Padres Afroamericanos es un grupo de padres que ayuda a las familias de Waukegan, a las escuelas y a los negocios y organizaciones de la comunidad a construir buenas relaciones con las familias Afroamericanas para promover la confianza y las relaciones con la meta de fomentar el éxito escolar desde Preescolar hasta la graduación.
